World Wetlands Day, 2 February 2024

World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February to raise awareness of the important role wetlands play in human prosperity and the health of the planet. The 2024 theme, ‘Wetlands and human well-being’, focuses on the interdependence between wetlands and several aspects of human well-being, including physical, mental and environmental health. Wetlands provide vital freshwater, home to over 100,000 species. They sustain humanity, as evidenced by the rice grown in wetland rice paddies, a staple food for three billion people, contributing 20% of the world's diet. Wetlands also act as natural shock absorbers, softening the impact of rainfall and reducing the risk of flooding and storm surges. Recognising their importance, the FAO is actively involved in supporting the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of wetlands for food security and agriculture, including crop and livestock production, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, while promoting integrated land and water resources management, and addressing the challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity and the demands of different sectors.
